JoAn B. Slautterback, 85, of Port Royal, passed away Thursday, March 31, [2016] while in residence at Locust Grove Retirement Village.
Born July 29, 1930, in Port Royal, she was a daughter of the late Mary Kathleen (McLain) and Gordon T. Bashore.
She is survived by: her husband, Robert M. Slautterback, of Port Royal; sister, Patricia Forney, of Port Royal; daughter, Patricia J. Knouse and husband, Rick, of Mifflintown; son, Robert G. Slautterback and long-time companion, Sandra Friend, of McHenry, Md.; grandson, John Knouse and wife, Amanda, of Front Royal, Va.; three granddaughters, Tara E. B. Spence and husband, Brian, of Arlington, Va., Amber Henson and husband, Ryan, of Martinsburg, W.Va., and Danielle Polk, of Ridgeley, W.Va.; and she had three great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her twin sister, Jeanette LaRue Bashore.
JoAn graduated from Tuscarora Valley High School in 1948 and later attended Thompson Institute in Harrisburg. She received an associate's degree from Albright College in Reading.
She worked as a loan officer at the Boyertown National Bank until 1974, when she and Bob moved to McHenry, Md. She was the chief loan officer at First United Bank in Oakland, Md., until her retirement in 1987 and return to Port Royal. She served as the secretary of the Borough of Port Royal for many years, and became the first woman to serve as mayor when she was appointed by the council to serve in an interim capacity in 2001.
JoAn delivered Meals on Wheels for many years and was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church, where she was instrumental in securing donations for the Handicapped Accessibility Fund and a church elevator. She also served as a volunteer for the church's food stand at the Juniata County Fair.
JoAn was an avid card player, and played with numerous bridge clubs in Juniata and Mifflin counties. She was a member of the Port Royal Book Club. She enjoyed nature and spending time at Deep Creek Lake, McHenry, Md.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday, April 4, at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, April 5, at the Port Royal Lutheran Church, officiated by the Rev. Charles L. Hershberger. Interment will follow at New Church Hill Cemetery.
