Born in the Philadelphia PA area in 1924, Edie's family moved to Port Royal in 1928. Daughter of Daniel Thatcher Snyder and Edith (Lees) Snyder, she attended Port Royal High School graduating in 1942. She briefly moved to the Lewistown, PA area and then to the Mifflintown, PA area where she met her husband Myron Phillips whom she married in 1946. They set-up housekeeping in the Arch Rock, PA area and moved to Port Royal around 1955. They lived on Tuscarora Street until 1966 when they moved to the Old Port area. In 1971 they moved further outside of Port Royal to Mountain Road area along the Tuscarora Mountain. They lived there until 1992 when they moved back into Port Royal and lived on Milford Street beside MacBarney's.
She was primarily a homemaker raising six children (Ben, Bonnie, Mary Louise, Joe, Larry, and Amy) until 1965 when she started working for the Rae Sel sewing factory in Port Royal. She continued working there until its closing in the late 1970's.
Edie remained in Port Royal until her death in February 2003.
OBITUARY for EDITH S. PHILLIPS
Edith S. Phillips, 78, of 508 Milford Street, Port Royal, died Tuesday, February 18, 2003, at her home.
Born July 13, 1924 in Philadelphia, PA, daughter of the late Daniel and Edith (Lees) Snyder. She was the widow of Myron O. Phillips, who died April 3, 1997.
She was a retired seamstress, having worked for the former Rae-Sel Corporation, Port Royal. She was a 1942 graduate of the Port Royal High School; was a member of the Port Royal Presbyterian Church and was a Past Trustee and Elder of the church and a member of the Turbett Grange #781.
Surviving are 3 sons, Benjamin C. Phillips of Port Royal, Joseph M. Phillips of RR2, Port Royal, Larry A. Phillips of RR1, McAlisterville; 3 daughters, Mrs. William (Bonnie C.) McCurry of Burnham, PA, Mary Louise Gutshall of Port Royal, Mrs. Allan (Amy Lynne) Schwoyer of Harrisburg; 2 brothers, Thomas D. Snyder of Fairfax, VA and Charles M. Snyder of Hublersburg, PA; 2 sisters, Mrs. Richard (Mary) Macialek of Bellefonte, PA and Virginia Schmelter of Houston, TX; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by 1 sister, Margaret Snyder.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2003 at 10 a.m., from the Port Royal Presbyterian Church, Port Royal, with Rev. Carol E. Davis officiating. Interment in East Waterford Cemetery, East Waterford. Viewing on Friday from 7-9 p.m. at the Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal.
