This house is on the south side of Market Street. In 2009 it appears to be a rental unit owned by David and Polly Lee.
Prior to the construction of the current building, this property had been the location of a double house that was destroyed by fire in 1947. (See story that follows)
DOUBLEHOUSE FIRE (Port Royal Times - March 4, 1947)
Saturday morning [1 Mar 1947] about 10 o'clock fire broke out in what is known as the Shoaff double dwelling house on Market Street, Port Royal, directly across the street from the Times office and for a time threatened adjoining properties.
The alarm of fire was quickly given and the fire company responded promptly and soon had several streams of water playing on the blaze. But it looked for a time as if the local company was not going to be able to overcome the fire and hold it to the building in which it originated, so a hurried call was sent to Mifflin and Mifflintown and both companies responded quickly. [However] by the time they arrived, the local company had succeeded in overcoming the ravaging flames to such an extent that it was not necessary for the visiting companies to go into action.
This was a double dwelling house which Mr. Rush Leidy and his family occupying one side and Mr. John Fry the other. The fire originated in the end of the house by Mr. Fry and presumably started from an oil heater which was burning in the house when Mr. Fry went to the A&P Store for some supplies. He was only gone for a short time, but during his absence, the fire broke out and almost everything he had in his house was destroyed on account of the short time that it took for the flames to spread through the part of the house occupied by him.
It was only a short time until the flames ate their way into the part of the house occupied by Mr. Leidy and his family. Only one room in the building escaped great damage, The greater part of the household goods of the Leidy Family was either destroyed by fire or water.
