OBITUARY for MR. WILLIAM A. GOODMAN

Mr. William A. Goodman, a veteran of the Civil war and a life-long resident of Juniata County, departed this life at the home of his son, Mr. S. A. Goodman, with whom he has resided since the death of his wife a number of years ago, on Sunday afternoon at 2:30 o’clock, after a lingering illness of diseases incident to old age, he being aged 88 years, 9 months and 18 days.

Mr. Goodman for many year, followed his trade as a lime burner in Juniata and Mifflin counties until his health became such that he was compelled to give it up. Since which he has lived retired.

He enlisted in the Union army at Philadelphia Jan. 31, 1862 and was assigned to Co. F, 12th Pa. Cavalry.

After spending a couple months in Philadelphia, he was sent to his regiment for active duty. He took part in the following engagements: Bristow Station, Manassas. At the second battle of Bull Run his horse was shot from under him and he was taken prisoner. He was parolled and sent to the Northern lines the third day. His regiment, during his parole, before he was exchanged, took part in the battles of South Mountain and Antietam. After being exchanged he took part in the following battles: Strausburg, Jane Lieu, Winchester, McConnellsburg, Maryland Line, Toma.hawk.

He was honorably discharged at Martinsburg, W. Va. Jan. 31, 1864, by reason of re-enlistment. He re-enlisted Feb. 1, 1864 at Winchester, Va., in the same Co. and Regt. In his second enlistment he took part in the following engagements: Boliver and Maryland Heights, Frederick City, Monococy, Winchester, Charleston, Va.

He was honorably discharged at Winchester, Va., July. 20, 1865, after which he returned to civilians life.

The deceased is survived by' two sons, Samuel A., of Port Royal, and Edward, of Harrisburg and six daughters, Mrs. W. E. Johnson of Welch W. Va, Mrs. S. E. Dellinger of near Middleburg; Mrs. Blair Haines of Huntingdon; Mrs. Bruce Patton of Yeagertown; Mrs. John Bishop of Mifflin, and .Mrs. A. M. Dill of Mexico.

The deceased was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran church for many years. Funeral services will be held in the Lutheran church Wednesday morning at 11 o'clock, conducted by his pastor, Rev. H. W. Webner, after which interment will be made in [Old] Church Hill cemetery.
