OBITUARY for JOHN PORTER LONGENECKER

John Porter LONGENECKER, 74, of Port Royal, died at 1:11 p.m. Sunday, April 27, 1997 in the emergency room of Lewistown Hospital.

Born April 10, 1923 in Petersburg, he was a son of the late John and Hulda [Carolus] Longenecker. His wife, Joy I. [Leonard] Longenecker, whom he married January 26, 1944, survives.

Also surviving are: children, John "Butch" R. Longenecker, San Diego, CA, Sandra K. Roush, Thompsontown, Sharon L. Eaton, Port Royal RR3, Mrs. Samuel [Sherry] Klinger, Port Royal; brothers and sisters, Charles Longenecker, Willoughby, OH, James Longenecker, Huntingdon RR2, Sarah Corcelius, Belleville, Mrs. Russell [Jane] Walters, Lewistown RR4; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Wendell Longenecker and Eugene Longenecker.

He worked for S. R. Bashore Hardware, Port Royal, until 1986, when he started Longenecker Plumbing and Heating, from which he retired in 1996.

He was the mayor of Port Royal for 40 years and was a member of Port Royal Presbyterian Church, Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal, Port Royal Ambulance Association and Juniata County Sportsmen's Association. He was also instrumental in starting the Boy Scout troop in Port Royal and was a leader for many years.

Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third Street, Mifflintown, with Revs. James R. Sunderland Jr. and Richard Burchfield officiating. Interment will be in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal. There will be no viewing or visitation.

Memorial contributions may be made to Port Royal Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 265, Port Royal, PA, 17082 or to the Central Pennsylvania Chapter of Alzheimer's Disease, 600 N. l2th Street, Lemoyne, PA 17043.
