OBITUARY for JAMES M. ‘JIM’ SHERLOCK JR.

MIFFLIN - James M. "Jim" Sherlock Jr., 86, of Academia, died at 2:05 a.m. Monday, March 26, 2012, at Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin.

Born Aug. 4, 1925, in Lewistown, Mifflin County, he was a son of the late James M. Sr. and Bertha E. (Stringer) Sherlock. On March 24, 1956, he married his surviving wife, Dorothy (Campbell) Sherlock, of Academia, with whom he shared 56 years and two days of marriage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his children, Jane B. Shearer and her husband, Dave, Sharon E. Clayton and her husband, Randy, all of East Waterford, James F. Sherlock and his wife, Teresa, of Academia, and Brenda L. Shickley and her husband, Terry, of Manchester. He also leaves behind 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

One daughter, Deborah Keiper, preceded him in death in 2009, and he was the last of his generation, having been preceded in death by one brother, Harold Sherlock, and three sisters, Mary Birkholtz, Harriet Sherlock and Jean Sherlock.

Mr. Sherlock was a 1945 graduate of Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal, and during World War II, he proudly served his country as a paratrooper with the U.S. Army's 82nd Airborne Division.

James worked for the Texas Eastern Transmission Corp, in Perulack, for 25 years, until retiring in 1985 as the head turbine mechanic. He also served as justice of the peace in Lack Township for 12 years.

Jim was a member of Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia, where he served as elder and past superintendent of the Sunday school. He also served as past president of the Academia Cemetery Association, as a Cub Scout and Boy Scout leader, and as an EMT and member of the East Waterford Fire Co., as well as a member of both Beale Township Fire Co. and Friendship Fire Co. He recently was awarded his 50 year membership pin from the Union Lodge No. 324, F&AM, Mifflintown. His other masonic memberships include the AASR Harrisburg Consistory, where he was a 32nd degree mason, and the Tall Cedars of Lebanon, Juniata Forrest No. 88.

He led a very active lifestyle. Jim was a licensed airplane pilot, who loved music and enjoyed playing his guitar. He was also very passionate about the outdoors and loved to fish and hunt, especially turkeys. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather, who relished the time he spent with his family.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2012, at Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, Academia, with the Rev. Ed Carlson officiating. Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military burial honors. Interment will be in the Academia Cemetery.

Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, where a masonic service will be held at 8:45 p.m.
