Ruth Mae LANDIS (9 Jun 1916 - 23 Feb 2009) was the daughter of George Mitchell and Bessie Mae (Pry) Varnes. She was the wife of C. Ralph Landis (3 Nov 1914 - 28 Jul 1960) and they had two daughters: JoAnne Landis Heckert and Nellie Mae Landis Sorensen. Ralph and Ruth Landis and family lived on the west side of Route 333 in Turbett Township (Old Port) most of their lives.

OBITUARY for RUTH VARNES LANDIS

PORT ROYAL - Ruth V. Landis, 92, of RR3, Port Royal (Old Port), died at 10:35 a.m., Monday, Feb. 23, 2009, at Brookline Manor, RR1, Mifflintown.

Born on June 9, 1916, in Milford Township, Juniata County, she was the daughter of the late George Mitchel and Bessie Mae (Pry) Varnes. Her husband, C. Ralph Landis, preceded her in death on July 28, 1960.

Surviving are: two daughters, Mrs. Robert (JoAnne) Heckert, of Port Royal and Mrs. J. Glenn (Nellie) Sorensen, of Flagstaff, Ariz; three grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was the last of her immediate family.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, J. Glen, Harry and Brady Varnes; and by five sisters, Margaretta Nace, Isabell Stump, Catherine Sheets, Helen Wharton Kepner, and Mary Grace Varnes.

She retired in 1979 from Rae-Sel Corp., Port Royal.

She was a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church, Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal, The Ladies Auxiliary of th American Legion Post No. 298, Mifflintown, and was a former senior regent for the Millerstown Moose.

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2009, at the Rex Funeral Home, 308 Market St., Port Royal, with the Rev. Charles L. Hershberger officiating. Interment will follow in Old Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday, at the funeral home.

Memorial donations may be made to the Port Royal Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 267, Port Royal, PA 17082 or to the Port Royal EMS, P.O. Box 265, Port Royal, PA 17082.

A surprise birthday party for Ruth that was held at the Community Building for her 89th birthday. Her entire family was present except for Dennis Wharton and family of Mesa, Arizona. She was very surprised and very thankful for the many friends and relatives that attended her 89th Birthday. (Ruth is in the center and at her right shoulder is daughter JoAnne and at her left shoulder, daughter Nellie.)

RUTH LANDIS CELEBRATING HER 92ND BIRTHDAY -- Ruth enjoyed her 92nd birthday with a cake, ice cream and flowers sent by her daughter Nellie Sorensen from Flagstaff, AZ and with a dinner with her other daughter Joanne Heckert and family.

This is a picture of Ruth Landis and Jim McClure during 2008 as they are the first to officially cross the new Tuscarora Creek Bridge between Port Royal and Old Port.
