OBITUARY for DONALD F. LORENZ
Donald F. Lorenz, 90, formerly of Thompsontown, passed away at 10:00 AM on Wednesday, December 22, 2022 at the Manor at Brookline, Mifflintown.
Born on August 6, 1932, in Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, he is a son of the late Leo Thomas and Barbara (Prokupek) Lorenz. On December 16, 1960, he married his surviving wife, Mary Lou (Eaton) Lorenz, with whom he was blessed to share more than 62 years of marriage before his passing.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Debra L. Bardell and her husband Ash of Millerstown, Jeffrey L. Lorenz and his wife Patricia of McAlisterville, and Leo T. “Tom” Lorenz II of Millerstown; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Knechtel of Burlington, WA and Audrey Jensen of Lampasas, TX; and several generations of nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one grandson, Matthew T. Lister; and five siblings, Leo Joseph Lorenz, Lyle Lorenz, Earl Lorenz, Betty Huebner, and Ethel Willard.
Mr. Lorenz honorably served our country in the United States Army during the Korean War.
He was a Broadcaster for more than 25 years for WJUN and was involved in radio for over 40 years, was a local DJ for various record hops, and worked as an Audiologist for more than 20 years. Also, alongside his wife and family, he owned and operated the former Lorenz’s Corner Deli in Thompsontown for over 15 years.
In earlier life, he attended the Locust Run United Methodist Church and was a member of the AMVETS J.E. Bowen, Jr Post 122, both of Thompsontown.
Donald was the original track announcer for the Pocono International Raceway in Long Pond, PA and was a track announcer for Port Royal Speedway for over 25 years where he was inducted into the Port Royal Speedway Hall of Fame in 2017.
His hobbies included being an avid hunter, taking immaculate care of his lawn, reading, camping with his family, following his grandchildren’s sporting events, and will be remembered for his love of drinking coffee.
Memorial Services will be announced at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Mr. Lorenz’s memory can be made to the McAlisterville Senior Center, 158 Lions Den Drive, McAlisterville, PA 17049.
