OBITUARY for Herbert L. Burd Jr.

Herbert L. Burd Jr., 89, of Honey Grove, passed away at 11:20 AM on Monday, June 20, 2022 at his home.

Born on September 8, 1932 in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata Co., he is a son of the late Herbert L Sr. and Sylvia (Ritzman) Burd.

On November 6, 1952 he married his late wife, Nellie (Gray) Burd, with whom he was blessed to share almost 53 years of marriage.

Surviving are two daughters-in-law, Lori A Burd and her companion Dave Snyder, of Honey Grove, Deborah F. Kerstetter, of Mifflintown, three grandchildren, Dulcie E. Peck, Mandy J. Kerstetter and Levan Burd; and he leaves behind two precious grandsons, Jonathon Peck and Kaden Kerstetter.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, Kent Burd and Calvin Kerstetter.

In 1950 he graduated from Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal. In 1953 he was inducted into the US Army where he attained the rank of CPL(T), while he proudly served his country during the Korean War.

Mr. Burd was a lifelong farmer and also was a retired rural mail carrier.

His memberships included the Lower Tuscarora Presbyterian Church, where he served as a Trustee and Elder and he was a lifelong member of the Pennsylvania Farm Bureau. His charter memberships included Friends of Massey Ferguson, Moliene Gold and the Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days.

Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, June 22, 2022 at the Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown with the Rev. Graham C. Fowler officiating. Interment will follow at the Academia Cemetery, Academia, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

A viewing will take place from 1 PM until the time of service on Thursday, June 22, 2022 at the funeral home.

In lieu of flowers the family has kindly asked that donations in Mr. Burd’s memory can be made to Tuscarora Valley Heritage Days, P.O. Box 5, East Waterford PA 17021.
