OBITUARY for ROBERT REYNOLDS DEEN

ROBERT REYNOLDS DEEN, MD, resident of Castro Valley, California for 42 years, passed away on October 27 [1999] at home with the family.

Robert was born in Port Royal, PA, September 17, 1915, the son of Harry S. and Gertrude (Groninger) Deen.

He was a graduate of Ursinus College and Temple Medical School, 1940. He interned in Philadelphia and served as a Navy medical officer at sea much of World War II. As Commander he entered a Psychiatric Residence program at the Naval Medical Center at Bethesda, MD in 1947 with a deep commitment to help those with problems that interfered with daily living.

In 1953 he was transferred to California and remained a Navy Psychiatrist until his retirement as Captain in 1964. He then became a psychiatrist for Alameda County and also was in private practice until 1978.

Despite a severe hearing deficit and visual impairment he enjoyed travel and had a great interest in geography, world affairs, the environment, and gardening. He was an avid bridge player.

Robert was husband and best friend of Marian for 52 yeas and the proud father of four University of California graduates: Robert R. (Robin) Deen Jr., Paula Deen, Jeffrey Alex Deen, and Justus Barnett Deen.

Also surviving are daughters-in-law Robin Hill and Lisa Deen; and eight grandchildren, Christian Alcorn, Katrina Hunn, Damon Alcorn, Caitlyn Deen, Michael Deen Weston Chandler Deen, Robert (Bob) Deen and Julia Deen; a sister, Ruthanna Gable.

Preceding him in death was son, Jeffrey, a geologist.
