OBITUARY for WALTER L. ‘PETE’ HORNING, JR.

Walter L. "Pete" Horning, Jr., 90, formerly of Port Royal, passed away at 12:24 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 16, 2016, at the Golden Living Center-William Penn.

Born Dec. 16, 1925, in Mifflintown, he was a son of the late Freda (Jacobs) and Walter L. Horning.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by: his wife, Dolores (Crago) Horning, who died Feb. 10, 2011; three sisters, and a brother.

He is survived by: his children, Benjamin E. Horning and wife, Jeanne, of Lewistown, and Walter L. Horning, III and wife, Louise, of Mifflintown; four grandchildren, Brian Horning and Tami Kenepp, both of Lewistown, Laurie Yoder and husband, Casey, of Reedsville, and Gretchen Gilbert and husband, John, of Port Royal; three step grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and four siblings, Theda Riden, of Monkton, Md., Shirley Bull, of Lewistown, Donald Horning and wife, Betty, of Colorado Springs, Co., and Robert Horning and wife, Joyce, of Lewistown.

Early in life, Pete worked at the American Viscose Corp. for 27 years and later, as a security guard at Standard Steel from 1976-1991.

He was Protestant by faith.

Pete was an avid Phillies and Penn State fan.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2016, at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St., Lewistown, with the Rev. Karen McCachren officiating.

A viewing will be held from 10 a.m. until the time of service at the funeral home.

Interment will take place in Juniata Memorial Park, Lewistown.

Walter specifically wanted to thank his nurses at Geisinger-Lewistown Hospital Cardiac Rehab, and two special friends, Caddie Carstetter and John Young, for their care.
