OBITUARY for DAVID WAYNE SHEETS
PORT ROYAL - David Wayne Sheets, 68, of Port Royal, died at 10:10 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, at the Harrisburg Hospital.
Born on Oct. 9, 1944, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late David L. and Catherine (Varnes) Sheets. On June 26, 1965, he married his surviving wife, Elsie J. (Benfer) Sheets, with whom he spent more than 47 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Scott R. Sheets and his wife, Pam, of Port Royal, and he leaves behind one grandson, Pfc. Barry Sheets and his wife, Allison, of Fort Hood, Texas.
Mr. Sheets was a 1964 graduate of Tuscarora Valley High School, Port Royal, and a member of the Matamoras United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Middleburg Lodge No. 619 F&AM, A.A.S.R. Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shrine, Tall Cedars Juniata Valley Forest No. 88, Friendship Fire Co. No. 1, vice president of the Juniata County Farm Bureau and was in charge of advertising for the Juniata County Fair board.
In 1999, he retired from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with 33 years of service as a computer operations manager, having worked for the Department of Motor Vehicles, DEP and the Retired Teachers Board. During his retirement from the Commonwealth, he worked in the assessment office for both Snyder and Juniata Counties.
His hobbies included horseshoeing, light harness horse racing, NASCAR, dirt track racing at the Port Royal Speedway and hunting.
Masonic services will be accorded by his lodge at 7 p.m., followed by a memorial service on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013, at Port Royal United Methodist Church, corner of Market and Fifth Streets, Port Royal, with the Rev. Kenneth Kitzmiller officiating. Interment will be private.
