OBITUARY for EDWARD C. “FAST EDDIE” MCCARDLE

Edward C. “Fast Eddie” McCardle, 94, of 109 Race Track Lane, Beaver Springs, passed away at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, March 18, 2015 at Golden Living Center – William Penn.

Born February 28, 1921 in Burnham, he was the son of the late Charles I. “Ike” and Catherine (Cleck) McCardle.
He was preceded in death by: a son, Michael A. McCardle in 1953; and his wife of 63 years, Rita J. Sdao McCardle, in 2007.

He is survived by: his son, Robert I. McCardle and wife, Donna Marie, of Beaver Springs; grandson, Albert Habbershon and wife, Amanda, of Omaha, Neb.; grandchildren, Wyatt and Reagan, of Omaha, Neb.; granddaughter, Mandy Seitz, of Lewistown; and great-grandsons, Trenton, of Lewistown and Adam Casner, of Mifflintown; a brother, Guy McCardle, of Burnham; and a sister, Joyce Rodenbaugh, of Orlando, Florida.

He was a graduate of Burnham High School and Aero ITI.

Before WWII, he and his brother were field representatives for United Aircraft of Bridgeport, Connecticut, overseeing the production of F4U Corsair Navy fighters and various other aircraft. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving in the Atlantic Theater.

He was well known in local racing circles and was a founding member and first president of Penn Central Racing Association that started the Port Royal Speedway in 1951. He was the first ever points champion and went on twice more to earn the title.

He owned and operated Ike & Sons Esso, Fast Eddie’s Used Cars and E&W Rebuilders, retiring in 2003 at age 82. He, along with his father, Ike, and son, “Beaver Bob”, built and promoted Beaver Springs Dragway in 1971. The raceway is still in continuous operation to this day. He was a sportsman, an avid racing fan and a loving husband and father. In retirement he became quite the Western movie buff, reminiscing to all about the old cowboy movies. Always by his side, in later years, was his faithful Westie, Toby.

Friends can call from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Sunday, March 22 at Heller-Hoenstine Funeral Homes, Inc., Woodlawn, 200 N. Main St. Lewistown.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Monday, March 23 at the funeral home with Pastor Michael Bailey officiating.

Interment with VFW Post 7011 military honors will take place in Juniata Memorial Park Cemetery.
