OBITUARY for RAYMOND T. ‘RT’ LONG SR.

Raymond T. "RT" Long Sr., 93, of Port Royal, died on Tuesday, Dec. 30, 2014, at his home.

Born on Nov. 11, 1921, in Spruce Hill Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Lewis L. and Blanche M. (Bailor) Long. In July of 1949, he married his late wife, Gladys I. (Roe) Long, with whom he shared more than 50 years of marriage before she preceded him in death on Dec. 5, 1999.

Surviving are: a son, Raymond T. "Ray" Long Jr., of Port Royal, and his companion, Louise A. Bashore; a brother, Larry L. Long and his wife, Darleen "Sis," of Port Royal; a sister-in-law, Florence "Flo" Long, of Port Royal; three granddaughters, Joelle Long, Stacey Long and Anna Long; and his two faithful rabbit dogs, Ben and Fan.

One brother, Albert J. "Jack" Long preceded him in death on March 8, 1999.

Mr. Long was a proud U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he was the awarded the Bronze Star for his valor in the European Theater.

He was a lifelong member of the Ebenezer United Methodist Church, a member of the Mifflintown Rotary and the National Rifle Association. He had served on the main board of directors of the First National Bank of Mifflintown and currently was a member of the emeritus board of the First National Bank of Mifflintown.

Raymond was a dairy farmer along with his wife and son Ray until his retirement. He also was an auctioneer who started with his father Lewis. He later worked with his brother Larry and it became known as Long Bros. Auctioneers. He then worked with his son, Ray, and it was known as Long's Auction Service. His auctioneering career spanned over fifty years.

RT was a true outdoorsman who loved hard work and was an avid hunter, who actually was hunting rabbits the day before he passed away.

A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Jan. 5, 2015, at Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St., Mifflintown, with the Pastor Gay Irwin officiating. After the service, interment will take place in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, where full military burial honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council.

Viewing will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 4, 2015, at the funeral home.
