OBITUARY for JAMES R. “JIM” DIVEN, SR.

James R. “Jim” Diven Sr., 78, of Mifflintown died at 4:10 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at his home.

Born May 2, 1936 in Armagh Township, Mifflin County. He was a son of the late George and Esther [Rhoades] Diven. On May 12, 1955, he married his surviving wife, Shirley [Leahy] Diven, with whom he shared nearly 59 years of marriage.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, James R. Diven Jr. and wife Jean, Larry E. Diven and wife Lori and Pamela S. Specht, all of Mifflintown, Michael W. Diven and companion Kimberly A. Walmer of Harrisburg; one brother, Ross Franklin Diven and wife Oshie of Phoenix, AZ, one sister, Patricia Ann Johnson of Lewistown; ten grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

Two brothers. Harry L. Diven and Robert E. Diven, and two sisters, Gladys Bowen and Mary E. Zeigler- preceded him in death.

James was a member of First Baptist Church of Mifflintown and was a licensed minister in the Southern Baptist Church. He also served as the mayor of Port Royal for four years.

Mr. Diven. Whose career in the military spanned more than two decades, proudly served his country during the Korean Conflict and the Vietnam War. He first served in the U.S. Army, with the 101st Airborne Division, and later reenlisted in the U.S. Air Force until his retirement. After retiring from the military he retired as a computer analyst from the Navy Depot, Mechanicsburg.

Being an avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed camping and hunting deer, however, his greatest enjoyment came from spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were Tuesday, May 6, 2014 from Brown Funeral Homes, Inc., Mifflintown with Pastor Ronald Shupe officiating. Interment followed in Adams Cemetery, Mifflintown where the Juniata County Veterans Council accorded full Military burial honors.
