OBITUARY for DR. ROBERT BROWN SHORT
Dr. ROBERT BROWN SHORT, 87, died in Tallahassee, Florida on November 24, 2007.
Born February 28, 1920 in China where his parents, Samuel and Rachel Brown Short, were serving as Christian missionaries.
His first wife, Lavinia Mullinix Short, preceded him in death. His second wife, Margaret Short, survives.
Surviving are: sisters, Jane Short Hower of Elliottsburg, May Short Lootens of Aberdeen, MD; children, Sally Short Jue, Rebecca Short Pruitt, both of Tallahassee; and son, Robert Timothy Short of St. Petersburg, FL; grandchildren, April Jue, Heather Jue Vaught, Robert Thomas Short, Anders Shod.
In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by: a brother, Dr. William Short; and a sister, Mable Short Garner.
Most of his early education was in the Harrisburg schools, and he graduated from Port Royal High School in 1937, after his family had moved to Port Royal, when his father became Superintendent of Juniata Schools in 1934.
He received higher education at Maryville College in Tennessee, University of Virginia, Tulane University and University of Michigan where he earned his Ph.D. degree.
In the 1970's Bob was a part of an expedition to the South Pole where he discovered a new organism. His many experiments were published in several scientific journals.
Mr. Short was retired as a professor in the zoology department of Florida State University. Memorial services were held in Tallahassee on December 10.
