OBITUARY for GEORGE W. MARTIN
MIFFLIN - George W. Martin, 81, of the Locust Grove Retirement Village, Mifflin, and formerly of Port Royal, died at 4:06 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 19, 2012, at the village.
Born Dec. 10, 1930, in Beale Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late William H. and Alda (Winey) Martin. On Jan. 18, 1958, he married his surviving wife, Helen M. (Bender) Martin, of Lewistown, with whom he shared more than 54 years of marriage.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by: two sons, David E. Martin and his wife, Deborah, of Port Royal, and Kenneth A. Martin, of Mifflin; and he leaves behind one granddaughter, Brittany N. Martin; one great-granddaughter, Mariah Scott; and one grandpuppy, Brooke Sue Martin.
One brother, Melvin Martin, preceded him in death, making him the last of his immediate family. He also was preceded in death by his beloved grandpuppy, Garth.
Mr. Martin was a 1949 graduate of Juniata Joint High School, Mifflintown, and was a member of the New Life Assembly of God Church, Mifflintown, where he attended regularly when his health permitted.
He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and proudly served his country with the U.S. Air Force.
For more than 37 years, George was employed as a cabinet maker for Triangle Pacific Cabinet Corp. of Thompsontown.
Before George was a resident at Locust Grove, he loved being in the outdoors, taking his daily two-mile walks and hunting for money and treasures with his metal detector. He also relished taking his grandpuppy Garth to McDonald's for their cheeseburgers. As a resident at Locust Grove for the past nine years, he always looked forward to Sundays when his family would gather and take him out for his Sunday dinner.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 23, 2012, at the Brown Funeral Homes Inc., 100 Bridge St. Mifflintown, with the Rev. Gary Krabill officiating. Interment will follow in the Union Memorial Gardens, Mifflintown, where the Juniata County Veterans Council will accord full military burial honors.
Viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 22, 2012, at the funeral home.
