Ruth M. Hower, 91, of Port Royal, passed away 11:55 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 1, 2017, at her home.
Born on Dec. 4, 1925, in Joller, the town named after her grandfather, John H. Miller, she was the daughter of the late George E. and Clara (Cook) Miller, past residents of Lewistown.
The last of her immediate family, she was preceded in death by sisters, June M. Bell, Mary A. Miller, Hazel M. Reinecker, and a brother, Marlin E. Miller.
She graduated from Lewistown High School and Haycum Junior College, Bryn Mawr.
Ruth worked in the main office of American Viscose Corporation, until Aug. 7, 1948, when she married Dwight B. Hower Jr., who preceded her in death on Nov. 24, 2011.
Mrs. Hower is survived by a daughter, Georgia M. Hutchings and husband, Denny, of Port Royal; and sons, Dwight Book Hower III and Jennifer, of State College; and Robert D. (Buzz) Hower and wife, Stacey, of Port Royal. Her only grandchild, Taylor Hower, was the love of her life.
Ruth worked as secretary of the Juniata County Agricultural Society and Port Royal Speedway for 18 years.
She was a life member of the Order of Eastern Star Lewistown Chapter 283, and a member of the Port Royal Lutheran Church. She enjoyed needlepoint, swimming, her Hammond organ, family get-togethers and visiting with friends. Last, but not least, her cat “Kitty.”
Graveside services will be held 2 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 5, 2017, at the New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, with the Rev. Charles L. Hershberger officiating.
