Lee WARREN Smith, 84, of Port Royal, died at 6:00 p.m. Wednesday, March 5, 1997, at Polyclinic Medical Center, Harrisburg.
Born November 18, 1912 in Walker Township, Juniata County, he was a son of the late Mervin and Della [Mertz] Smith. His wife, Jane B. Smith, died April 2, 1981.
He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews. He was the last of his immediate family, having been preceded in death by a brother, Dwinton Smith and two sisters, Sarah Emily Kipp Brubaker and Gertrude Kepner.
He was owner and publisher of The Times, Port Royal, from 1959-1971. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army. He was wounded in the Normandy Invasion and was awarded a Purple Heart.
He was a member of Port Royal Presbyterian Church and Friendship Fire Co., Port Royal, where he was chairman of the building committee when the Port Royal Community Building was built. He was also a member of American Legion Post No. 298 and VFW Post No. 5863, both of Mifflintown, AMVETS Post No. 122, Thompsontown, and was a founding director of Lost Creek Golf Club, Oakland Mills.
Services were held Saturday at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with Rev. Richard E. Wright officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal, where military graveside services were conducted by Juniata County Veterans Council.
