OBITUARY for HAROLD F. ‘JACKIE’ ‘TAG’ ‘TINY’ SHIELDS
Harold F. “Jackie” “Tag” “Tiny” Shields, 86 yrs., of Tuscarora, Juniata County, passed away at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, April 9, 2017 in Tuscarora.
Born on Aug. 8, 1930, in Tuscarora, he was the son of the late J. Paul and Grace Irene (Beasom) Shields.
Surviving is his only child, Sheila G. Shields, of Tuscarora.
Other survivors include: an uncle, Herb Beasom, of Tuscarora; his ex-wife, Stephany Kresen McCoy; and his ex-son-in-law, Guy Russell Towsey.
He was a 1948 graduate of Port Royal [Tuscarora Valley] High School.
A former worker at the Van Dyke Brick Yard, he later retired at the age of 55 from the former Capital Products in Mechanicsburg.
Harold, was drafted into the Marine Corps, and became a Korean War veteran, serving three years.
Mr. Shields was a long time member of the American Legion Post 298, of Mifflintown, and also belonged to the NRA, National Wild Turkey Federation, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, the Sheriff’s Association and was a former member of the Midnight Riders Motorcycle Club.
An avid lifelong hunter and fisherman, he enjoyed hunting on the Tuscarora Mountain, as well as taking hunting trips to Buffalo, WY., and Quebec, Canada.
Shortly after Harold’s retirement, D.D. Adams taught him how to make friction turkey calls. Harold will be long remembered for making and selling the “Tuscarora Legend Turkey Calls.”
His funeral will be held 10 a.m., Thursday, April 13, 2017 at Rex Funeral Home in Port Royal, with Rev. Leslie P. Towsey officiating.
Interment will follow at Newport Cemetery, Perry County, where the Juniata County Veteran’s Council will conduct full military honors.
A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
