John was one of nine children born to James and Ann Lewis McCachren. He was born on February 3, 1812. John married Esther Ann Arnold who was born on June 11, 1822.
The McCachrens lived on the road between Mifflin and Denholm and for many years John was the tax collector for Milford Township. They were Lutherans and worshiped at Messiah until St. Stephens's was established.
John and Esther had the following children: William Henry, Samuel Landis, Elisa Ann (Kissinger), Salina Jane, Mary Catherine, Harvey Luther, John Wesley, George Albert, and Rebecca (Mayer).
Esther Ann died at Mifflin on December 22, 1891 and was followed in death by John on March 19, 1892. Both are buried at St. Stephen's Lutheran Church Cemetery in Licking Creek Valley, as is their daughter Mary Catherine and John's sister Hannah.
