OBITUARY for EDWARD B. “ED” SWARTZ

Port Royal—Edward B. “Ed” Swartz, 54, of Port Royal, passed away on Wednesday, October 6, 2010 at his home.

Born March 28, 1956 in Lewistown, he is the son of the late Edward B. and Margaret (Zeigler) Swartz. He is survived by his wife, Shirl (Smith) Colyer, two daughters, Rachel Swartz Barrick and husband, Bradley of McAlisterville and Kimberly Colyer and companion, Brandon Fohringer, of Port Royal, one granddaughter, Makenzie Barrick, brothers and sisters, Norman Swartz of Thompsontown, Arthur Swartz, Harry Swartz, John Swartz, Jean Pruitt, and Kathy Huss, all of Port Royal, Jim Swartz and Donald Swartz, both of Mifflintown, Kathaleen Shambaugh of Selinsgrove, Madeline Donaldson of McAlistervile, and Mary Ranck of Mexico.

Ed was a veteran of the U.S. Army and worked as a mason for Bricklayer’s Craftsman Union Local 5 and for Albertus Engineering. He was the maintenance man for the Port Royal Speedway, bowled on Tuesday nights with CCDS bowling league and played softball on the Gray’s Pallets team.

He was a member of Tuscarora Church of the Brethren and the Mifflintown American Legion. He was a hard worker, enjoyed NASCAR, sprint car racing, and hunting and loved being outdoors.

His funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, October 10 at Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. Third St., Mifflintown with Rev. Charles Sheaffer officiating.

Interment will be in Locust Run Cemetery where full military honors will be accorded by the Juniata County Veterans Council. The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that contributions be made to Guss Funeral Home, 20 S. LOCAL MAN KILLED IN ACCIDENT

PORT ROYAL - A local man was killed in Turbett Township after a tree fell toward the ground and stuck him on the back of the head, while he was driving a tractor on Wednesday, Pennsylvania State Police Lewistown report.

Police said Edward Banks Swartz, 54, of Port Royal, was dragging a tree with his tractor at 2548 Tuscarora Road. According to the report, the tree he was dragging rubbed against a dead tree, which subsequently became dislodged before falling on the victim and tractor. The report states the tractor continued forward for an additional 15 feet before stalling against another tree..

Police said Swartz was pronounced dead at the scene.
