Robert Lytle was the son of Cecil and Janet (Koons) Lytle of Port Royal. He was born March 30, 1922. He was a 1940 graduate of Port Royal High School. Upon entering the military, he was assigned to the Pennsylvania State College as an Air Crew trainee under the Army Air Force College Training Program.

He married Charlotte Turbett.
