OBITUARY for MINERVA ZENDT SHEARER

PORT ROYAL - Minerva Z. Shearer, 97, formerly of Port Royal, died at 5:05 p.m. Monday, June 4, 2012, at Brookline Manor, in Mifflintown.

Born Sept. 4, 1914, in Walker Township, Juniata County, she was a daughter of the late Howard M. and Sylvia (Lauver) Zendt. Her husband, Glenn C. "Bubb" Shearer, preceded her in death on Dec. 23, 1960.

She was also preceded in death by: a daughter, Zenda Brackbill, on Sept. 8, 1999; brothers, John H. Zendt Sr., Charles H. Zendt, W. Andrew Zendt and J. Lloyd Zendt; and one sister, Carrie Shelley.

Surviving are: one grandson, Daniel G. Brackbill and wife, Tammy, of Port Royal; one stepgranddaughter, Tirzah Hosler, of Port Royal; and one brother, Wilbur R. Zendt, of Mifflintown.

Mrs. Shearer was a 1931 graduate of Mifflintown High School, where she was valedictorian of her class. She also was a 1935 graduate of Juniata College, in Huntingdon. She taught elementary education for 20 years in Lack and Tuscarora townships in Juniata County, as well as at the McCabe School in Lack Township, Waterloo Elementary, Wallace School of East Waterford and Cross Keys Elementary School.

She was the secretary and treasurer of Shearer Brothers Lumber Co. from 1942 to 1972 and was a partner in the business from 1960 to 1972. She was a director and treasurer of the East Waterford Industrial Corp. from 1960 until the business was sold.

Minerva and her late husband owned race horses. Her brother, Wilbur Zendt, was trainer and driver for their horses.

Mrs. Shearer was a member of Port Royal Presbyterian Church since 1964 and was a member of the Victory class at the church. She was a former member of the Galilee Shrine No. 30, in Lewistown. She served as director of the Juniata County Library Board from 1980 to 1986.

A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, June 9, 2012, at Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, with the Rev. Crystal M. Lyde officiating. Viewing will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, at the funeral home.

Interment will be in East Waterford Cemetery.
