OBITUARY for RUTH PEARL BERGSTRESSER ZENDT

RUTH B. ZENDT, 81, of Mifflin, died at 6:35 am, Wednesday, August 10, 1994 at Locust Grove Retirement Village, HC67, Mifflin.

Born May 30, 1913 in Three Springs, Huntingdon County, she was the daughter of the late Dean E. and Mabel [Abbott] Bergstresser Sr. her husband, W. Andrew Zendt, whom she married on May 26, 1938, survives.

Also surviving are: a brother, Dean E. Bergstresser Jr., Port Royal; and a sister, Mrs. Quig [Marie] Hockenberry, East Berlin RR1.

She was preceded in death by three brothers, Daniel, Robert and Theodore Bergstresser, and one sister, Louise B. Barner.

She was a retired school teacher and an administrator in Juniata County Schools with 60 years of service.

She was a teacher at Freedom Elementary School, Turbett Township, Juniata County, from 1933 to 1949. Then she was a teacher in Mifflin Elementary School from 1949 to 1958 and at Mountain View Elementary School from 1958 to 1966.

Mrs. Zendt was head teacher at Mountain View Elementary School from 1966 to 1972. She was principal of Fermanagh-Mifflintown and Mountain View elementary schools from 1972 to 1975.

She was mathematics specialist in Fermanagh-Mifflintown and Mountain View elementary schools from 1975 to 1983.

She was a school director for the Juniata County School District from 1983 to 1993.

Mrs. Zendt was a 1982 Pennsylvania Teacher of the Year finalist. She was a graduate of Port Royal High School class of 1931 and a graduate of Shippensburg College in 1933.

She was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown. She was a past board member of Community Concert Association, Juniata-Mifflin United Way and the American Cancer Society.

She was a member of Shippensburg University Alumni Association and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority. She was also a member of Business and Professional Women's Association.

Services were held Saturday at Messiah Lutheran Church, Mifflintown, with Rev. William N. Eshorn officiating. Interment was in New Church Hill Cemetery, Port Royal.

Rex Funeral Home, Port Royal, was in charge of arrangements.
